There is an amazingly beautiful rock formation there.
The gouges and grooves in these rocks were produced by ice-borne debris at the base of a glacier during the last glaciation, about 25,000 to 14,000 years ago.
Lovely as they are -- these weren't the rocks I was coming to see..
I was looking for an unusual rock I'd seen last year one day at low tide.
A rock with a message.
I don't know who Bev is but I can tell you that Tom loved her very much.

Sybil, I can't imagine how much effort went into writing this in stone. How very beautiful. I wonder how many years have gone by since it was written and whether the waves will eventually wash it from the stone.

ReplyDeleteOh, I think you should (write to the paper). It is a very touching history and I'm glad you, at least, have recorded it so well. I too wonder if she ever came back.

ReplyDeleteIn the third note image it looks like half of the message has been under water so I think it's partially covered at high tide. I didn't really notice at the time but will check it out again at high tide one day.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. My reaction is that Tom was not so much in love with Bev as obsessed with her. Which probably tells you more about me than it does about Tom. I wonder if there are folks around there who know the story.

ReplyDeleteHi Sybil. I may have a piece of this puzzle. A painting removed from Devils Island in the late 70's early 80's. It is a painting of a man and woman in the foreground (almost as if they are standing where the markings are now) with Devils Island in the background, then an image of a wedding with a crescent moon above. I have always wondered what the painting meant and who painted it. I have seen markings on the rocks also about a year ago and didn't think anything of it until i seen it again on the front page of the Beacon. I wounder if what I have is a painting of Tom and Bev. I have sent an email to the editor of the Beacon with images. So i wounder if this is part of your puzzle or one of my own.
