The note on the rock

Hartlen Point is a short drive up Shore Road, looking out on the widest part of Halifax Harbour and the Atlantic Ocean beyond.

There is an amazingly beautiful rock formation there.

The gouges and grooves in these rocks were produced by ice-borne debris at the base of a glacier during the last glaciation, about 25,000 to 14,000 years ago.

Lovely as they are -- these weren't the rocks I was coming to see..

I was looking for an unusual rock I'd seen last year one day at low tide.

A rock with a message.

I don't know who Bev is but I can tell you that Tom loved her very much.

            I love you.
           You know my pain inside.
My soul is ----.  For you
          Hold ME inside ALWAYS.

The love is gone out of your heart.

How long did it take Tom to carve these notes of devotion ?

... My love for you began here.   Tom.

Did Bev ever see it ?

Did Bev come back ?

  1. Sybil, I can't imagine how much effort went into writing this in stone. How very beautiful. I wonder how many years have gone by since it was written and whether the waves will eventually wash it from the stone.

  2. I wondered how old it was too. I am tempted to write to the Beacon (local paper) to see if anyone knows of Tom and Bev. Sybil

  3. Oh, I think you should (write to the paper). It is a very touching history and I'm glad you, at least, have recorded it so well. I too wonder if she ever came back.

  4. The note looks so interesting in your photos, too (as well as the fascinating rock in the first shot). Is the note only visible at low tide? Thanks for sharing this rock with a message, Sybil.

  5. In the third note image it looks like half of the message has been under water so I think it's partially covered at high tide. I didn't really notice at the time but will check it out again at high tide one day.

  6. Interesting. My reaction is that Tom was not so much in love with Bev as obsessed with her. Which probably tells you more about me than it does about Tom. I wonder if there are folks around there who know the story.

  8. Gerry, what a disturbing thought. What was a touching story of lost love is now a bit creepy. ;-)

  9. Hi Sybil. I may have a piece of this puzzle. A painting removed from Devils Island in the late 70's early 80's. It is a painting of a man and woman in the foreground (almost as if they are standing where the markings are now) with Devils Island in the background, then an image of a wedding with a crescent moon above. I have always wondered what the painting meant and who painted it. I have seen markings on the rocks also about a year ago and didn't think anything of it until i seen it again on the front page of the Beacon. I wounder if what I have is a painting of Tom and Bev. I have sent an email to the editor of the Beacon with images. So i wounder if this is part of your puzzle or one of my own.

  13. Hi Sybil, love your blog! I stumbled across this post not too long ago. I was wondering if you ever found out any more information about these rocks? Or if you ever saw the painting Tim offered to send to you. This mystery is haunting me! Thanks!
