A visit to the market -- the Seaport Farmers' Market.

Last year, a brand spanking new farmers' market opened on the harbour in Halifax.  A state-of-the-art building with wind turbines, solar lighting and living walls to cool and clean the air.  With marvellous views of  the harbour, George's Island and the cruise ship dock, it replaced the original farmers' market which was located in the old Alexander Keith's Brewery building.  Some nostalgic folk were just too attached to the old market and continue to sell their wares to their equally nostalgic customers. However, judging from the crowds, I'd say the new market is a hit.  A large open building, it is reminiscent of Toronto's St. Lawrence Market only with spectacular views, an upper level with coffee shops and an accessible roof-top garden.

There is a marvellous selection of local organic crops, meat and fish

.
There are also oodles of craft stalls selling everything from sea glass pictures to hand-made, leather shoes.

I love the name of this stall -- "The Quarrelsome Yeti".

Not candies -- earrings.

At the entrance there were a couple of buskers singing and playing their instruments.  Inside, at the base of the main staircase was a rather unique performer ...

"Would you like to see a magic trick?"

It was pouring outside and many good folk of Halifax had the same idea about going to the market.  It was busy in a vibrant, exciting way.   There was much to be experienced:  lavender scented soaps to sniff,  pepper jelly on crackers to be sampled, and flowers to be admired.

Why don't I go more often ?

  1. Did you gobble up all the free samples? If you sampled the pepper jelly on crackers, you must have met Pat. I haven't been to the Seaport Market yet. It's probably a delight to the senses.
