Two days of big rain and winds ...

Actually "big rain and winds" is an understatement.  It was more like hurling freakin' winds and driving rain.  I avoided going outside yesterday as it was just TOO MUCH !!!   Heck, I didn't even walk the half-block to the mailbox.  I stared gloomily out the window at the sodden laundry as it wrapped itself over and over around the clothes line.

Instead of their usual walks,  Wendy and Trey took turns on the treadmill.

Today I decided I owed them a decent outing, so I put on my waterproof pants and jacket, tugged on my lined, rubber boots, and strapped on my trusty s'ou wester hat, for a sodden stroll at Hartlen Point.

The hat was a going-away gift from friends back in Ontario.  When I was given it, I saw it as a gag-gift.  Now I treasure it for its practicality.  My head is always snug, warm and dry no matter how hard the driving rain.

It's also a marvellous prop for guests, as I cajole them into having their photograph taken wearing it.

My crazy cousin Carol.
Friend Pat.

My hat is a link to the friends I've left behind, and a fun way to remember those who've visited me in me here in Nova Scotia.

I love my hat !

  1. I would love to have a hat like that. I wonder if one could be ordered? It looks perfect for a really windy day. What a great gift you received.

    1. You can get flimsy plastic hats that may do if you're in a milder climate, but if it's cold where you are, go for the real thing. Lee Valley Tools sells them: http://www.leevalley.com/en/garden/page.aspx?p=10267&cat=2,42407,33240&ap=1

  3. That looks like a very sensible hat. I don't like to go out in the wind and the rain, but if I had a hat like that, I might do it more often. :)

    1. It's very warm with the ear flaps down. It's an iconic hat but I've never seen anyone else out and about wearing one. Thanks for stopping by.

  4. Even has ear flaps? That's what I'd call a perfectly thoughtful going away gift! You have good friends.
Glad you included your photo in the hat.

But I'd like to know how you taught your dogs to run on the treadmill. Or is that a joke?

    1. I never realized at the time what a marvellously practical gift it was !

      No joke.

Wendy and Trey both can use the treadmill. You have to introduce them to it slowly. i.e. with it OFF. We just got them to stand on it. Gave them a treat. I had them on leash to train them. We slowly started it and then gave them a treat while they were walking. I have a chair by the treadmill. Sat on that, to keep them from jumping off and to give treats.

Now I can just say "treadmill" and they'll hop on. No leash involved now. I can actually leave the room while they're trotting on it. I don't actually put it up to running speed. The best we do is "brisk walk". But I could never walk them at that speed or for that long. When it's really wet or cold, it's a great way to keep them from getting too frustrated. I also have some indoor training games to keep their little minds alive.
