What tide is it ?

It seemed fairly mild this afternoon, so I decided to take Wendy and Trey for a walk on McCormack's Boardwalk, and a run on the ocean floor.

Surprise number one, was that it was far colder and windier on the Boardwalk than it was at my house, a mere kilometre (less than a mile) away.

Surprise number two, was that the tide didn't seem to be all the way out.  I'd timed our walk for low tide.  But it wasn't.  Hmmmm.

How do I know when low tide is ?

I have a tide clock !

A tide clock is just an ordinary clock, with an extra hand.  In the photo above you can see that the "extra" red hand is pointing to the nine.  Notice that below the 12 and six, it says "High tide" and "Low tide" respectively. At the three and nine it says "half tide".  This photo was taken three hours before high tide.  So ... high tide will be at twenty to six: three hours later than the time currently showing on the clock.  Let me know if that explanation is somewhat lacking.

Recently we moved our clocks forward an hour.  Guess who forgot to also move the "extra" hand ahead an extra hour ?

Not caring a whit about my clock, or the timing of the tides, the dogs had their usual terrific time running up and down the beach after their ball.  Then, suddenly, dippy ol' Trey, hot from his run, veered off course, dashed into the ocean, and lay down.

What an idiot !

But he's MY idiot, and I love him.

  1. What a handy tool to have around when you want to plan things around the tides! Yesterday it was windy here, too – needed ear muffs to be outside. :) I love the way dogs don't worry about all these technicalities and simply know how to live in and enjoy the present moment...

    1. Barbara, yep, my tide clock was a real "find".

Dogs are big on living in the moment. Sometimes when they're chasing the ball, I feel like I'm running with them.

  2. I just guess if I lived where you do, I'd have a tide clock, too!

  4. Didn't we see Trey lie down in the water in another post recently, silly dog? Thank you for your explanation of the Tide Clock. We'll be headed down south and greeting ocean tides next month. Wonder if any of them have a tide clock down thattaway?

    1. You don't need a tide clock: just Google "tide times" for whatever location you're in ...

  6. Love your tide clock, Sybil. I've never seen one of those - but as someone else said - I just look up the tide table. It will be handy for you though, walking out to the beach so often, with the dogs.

  7. love the tide clock, Sybil - I've never seen one of those before - well, maybe at a harbour. That will be very handy for you living beside the ocean and walking out with the dogs.

    1. I got my clock in Mahone Bay for around $35. Since I'm 1 km from the shore, I've gotten in the habit of strolling into the kitchen to check the time. I see when low tide is and that affects when I go for my walk ...

  8. The enjoyment Trey felt being in the water must have far outweighed any amount of cold he felt. Every photo I see of Trey, I could swear he is smiling at the camera! He's a lovely boy. Joanne. :)

    1. Joanne, if there is a ball or a frisbee or a stick involved: Trey will be smiling. He's a very photogenic dog.
