Reflecting on a paddle.

I went for a lovey paddle at Shubie Park yesterday in my new kayak.  I know, I know, I already have two kayaks.

But, I wanted a kayak that would fit in my car with the hatch closed, and didn't weigh much.  At seven and a half feet long, and only 25 pounds my new "Pelican" kayak fits the bill.  And best of all, I got it on sale at Canadian Tire for only $209 !

Not suited to choppy water or the open ocean, my lil' kayak is super for just drifting through quiet places and seeing things close up.

I "think| this is the shed skin shell, of a Dragon Fly nymph.

Because it doesn't have a rudder I can float through masses of plants without getting hung up.

And it allows me to get close to the cutest of critters without startling them.

Sorry.  I should have given you an excess-cuteness warning prior to that last photo.  The lil' guy stood up and was flapping his stubby, non-existent wings with such confidence.  Sooo friggin' cute !

Not long after, whilst sitting, minding my own business, I noticed movement coming toward me.  I "think" it was a Muskrat.  He wasn't even startled by my being there.  It was as if he sees big BLUE logs every day and he paddled past unperturbed.

I spent a lot of time just enjoying the quiet; savouring the scent of the wetness and watching the way my paddle made ripples that curved the reflections of the reeds.

Do you see writing in the reflection too  ?
Is she balancing on an Alligator's head ?

Is that a monster walking by ?

You're welcome to join me some time.
Heaven knows, I now have enough kayaks to start my own paddling club !

    1. Oh the weather has been quite fine for several weeks now. We've had some hot weather (up to 30C) in Nova Scotia, though it's seldom that hot on the Atlantic coast. I must have sat for 1/2 an hour watching those ducklings ...

    1. It is so peaceful. I think I went paddling only three times last year but am making up for it this year.

  3. Sybil, this is great! Especially the excess cuteness, warning or no. I would love this about kayaking, the getting up close to nature in a quiet way. You really got some fabulous photos, my dear. Are you worried at all about the camera taking a dunk? That would be a little nerve-wracking to me.

    1. I should probably get a "dry bag" to keep the camera safe, but the biggest worry would be just dropping it whilst swooning because I was over-whelmed by fluffly ducklings !

    2. Back looking at this again. I really like the pics in this post. Are they bigger photos than you usually put in the blog? I like big pics. You've noticed? lol.

    4. Ha! It's my weird way of reading blogs. Every weekend I go through and check out the blogs of all my commenters and friends. Apparently, have already seen this one but was coming by again to see if you had anything new. I am SO HAPPY you're posting bigger, yes, yes! I am visually challenged and will only pause when something is big enough to knock me alongside of the head. Thank you.

  5. By kayak or canoe, but kayak is probably better, there is no other good way to travel the water and see the things that most miss. I am happy you had such a great time. Thanks for sharing. I think I read 'sassy' in the water, but that's probably my imagination working overtime. :)

  6. I didn't know they made such light kayaks - only 25 pounds? That I could manage, I think. (My friend has two kayaks but they are terribly heavy, which has prevented me from going with her. She needs help getting them onto the roof-rack of her car and I'm the weaker link that makes some teamwork impossible...)

It looks like your new kayak is bringing you to new worlds - how exciting to encounter a muskrat! I love the duckling flapping his little wings and the monster walking by. Great pictures!

    1. Thanks Barbara.

My other kayaks are 32 and 45 pounds. I used to have a roof rack that had an extender arm that stuck out to the side. You could pull the "arm" in and out as needed. I'd pull the arm out, and lift the front of the kayak up onto it, then lift the back of the kayak up without worrying about it falling off. Then I'd slide the front arm back into place ... perhaps your friend could ask about something like that ...
