Sandy's "Chooks" ...

Sorry that I've been A.W.O.L. for a while.

Lost myself for a bit and went on a "walk-about" to see if I could find myself.

One of the places I looked was back in Ontario, visiting friends and family.

And one of those friends, is Sandy.

Sandy and I met a bunch of years ago at Trent University  where we both worked.   I needed a friend and generously offered her $5 to be my friend.  She did the same : so we called it even and have been best buds ever since.

You know someone is your friend when they come and visit you in Nova Scotia, not in Summer but in February !

And so when I needed to regain some balance in my life, I spent a couple of days in Peterborough, getting together with wonderful, old friends and spending time with Sandy and her Chickens, or "Chooks" as she calls them.

Her two lovely "Goldens", Digby and Rickard, studiously NOT eating the Chooks.

She has at least six varieties of Chickens.  She even has Easter Eggers which lay rather unique, pale blue eggs.

Mixed in with the hens she has a rather confused, sex-crazed rooster.

While I was there the flock had their first chance to experience snow.

All-in-all, I think they'd give it a "wattle's-down".

Early morning visitors.
During my visit, Sandy arranged get-togethers with many of my chums.

me 'n Julie (Julie is the one without the furry face)
With Sandy and Cindy.
During dinner one evening Sandy reached in her wallet, pulled out a five dollar bill and without a word passed it across to me.  I said, "Thanks", and passed it back.

  1. Love this post. It's funny- has pics of chicks (not the human kind) and two gorgeous dogs. I like chickens a lot but not to eat. I love all the different varities

    1. I don't eat 'em either. Couldn't get over that gorgeous black one with the strikingly red wattles. I "think" it's a rooster.

  2. It's always great to catch up with old friends, and around Christmas seems to be the time of year when everyone thinks about catching up, too. They are two very well behaved Golden Retrievers, the chooks don't look at all concerned about them being there! ~ Joanne.

    1. Joanne, those dogs learned to be well-behaved after snuffing a couple of "Chooks" that they mistook for stuffed toys. Apparently the error of their ways was pointed out to them and they promised not to do it again.

  3. Welcome back to the blogosphere! Looks like you've had some wonderful times with friends - those are the best times. Because you chose to publish a photo of chicken sex and I think you have the sense of humor to appreciate this and not mind a little naughty language, here's a link to a blog post I think you will get a chuckle out of: http://thebloggess.com/2011/06/and-thats-why-you-should-learn-to-pick-your-battles/

    1. Thanks "Karma", followed your link to that very funny blog, and am mildly devastated to learn that a giant oil drum chicken named Beyonce has thousands of followers ...lol

      Happy New Year kiddo !

  4. I'm visiting Florida right now and there are chickens running around Ft. Lauderdale that look just like the one in your first photo, though no chance of snow here. While I was out walking Penny and Isabel yesterday we came across a small flock of them. It was the dogs first encounter with a live one, and I'm not sure which species was more interested in the other. The place is also thick with feral cats, so each walk is an adventure here. I hope you had a merry Christmas and that next year holds nothing but good for you.

    1. How long a drive is that from your home to Florida ? How are your dogs with the Chickens ? I take it they're keen on chasing the cats ?

Happy New Year back at ya Les ! Thanks for stopping by on your holidy.

BTW it's snowing like gang-busters here in the Passage.

    2. Sybil, the drive takes about 15 hours, and I am not sure I will do it all in one shot, ever again. I am back home now, and wrung out. I kept the dogs away from the chickens, as well as the cats. We have cats at home, at everybody seems to get along, but I think they would give chase to anything that would run.

  5. Simply loved this post, Sybil. What gorgeous pictures and a great feeling of friendship and tolerance between all kinds of living beings. I also loved the vidéo you posted on Yvonne's blog about your dogs playing with a cute little one. Thank you.

    1. Glad you liked this post and the video on Yvonne's blog. I think it's lovely that most of the blogs I follow are part of a community of blogs ... where we follow each other. I think in the old days we'd be what we'd call "pen pals".

  6. Welcome BACK, Sybil! Sounds like a visit was in need and sounds like it was the best decision. Look at those smiles, just look!

All the best and with cold weather descending upon us do keep warm and chipper. Sophie licks us all the time or else!

The Three Amigos found aimlessly walking around MacDonald Hill and inside The HOuse!!

    1. Thanks Ron. I'm not enjoying this cold. And it can get really bitchin' cold at MacDonald Hill. Wendy and I (sans Sooki) hope to bump into you sometime on the hill.

  7. We sometimes get pale blue chicken eggs from our local farm - I never know what assortment of sizes, shapes or colors the eggs will be when I open a dozen. It's good to have the variety - it makes for a healthier flock. Love the pictures of your friend's chickens.

It's wonderful to know you had a good visit with your friends! I love your method for starting a new friendship.
