Sooki

This is Sooki, my daughter Kait's dog.
Sooki is a Red-nose Pitbull.

Sooki is a very different dog from Trey.  While Trey is rugged, energetic and durable, Sooki is big cuddly suck who hates getting up in the morning and never wants to go outside if it's raining.

Her fur is thin and short so she needs a really good winter coat.
Kait bought Sooki less than a week after we moved from Ontario to Nova Scotia to save Trey from the Breed Specific Legislation* there.

Look how tiny she was.  Her head was too big for her little body,

AND she had blue eyes !

I love this photo of Kait with Sooki.

Doesn't Sook look rugged in this photo ?  In reality, rugged is never a word I'd use to describe her.

Kait works as a groomer and takes Sooki to work with her every day,

where she loves to curl up in anything small and cozy.

I know what you're thinking.  Yep, that's a pitbull and a teeny, tiny puppy.
Don't worry.
Kait would never let the puppy hurt Sooki.

One of the only things that excites her, is a Squirrel scolding her from the top of a tree.

Other than that, she has pretty much perfected the art of relaxing.

Shhhhh.

* Pitbull "type" dogs are banned in Ontario.  They can be seized and destroyed, simply for existing.

  1. Sigh...I love this blog post! Sooki is adorable and that picture of her and Kait is absolutely precious. Glad to hear Kait's got a heart as big as her mom's.

    1. Thanks. She and I both love animals and she's taught me a lot about dog training.

  2. Sybil these photos are so good with perfect wording for each photo. I'm glad you did this post for more people need to know it is not the breed of the dog but THE DOG and how it was raised or trained that makes the difference. Pit Bulls are some of the smartest dogs and the gentlest of dogs. Ignorant people make them aggressive. It is a real shame that they were bred way back when in England to fight a bull, hence the name- I think. I hope I have that right.

Oh and Sooki is sure a pretrty girl and so is your daughter. :-)

    1. Thank you for your compliments and for your understanding. It is so sad that animals have to pay for our mistakes and ignorance.

I think their breed name does do them a disservice. Did you know that around the 1920's the American Staffordshire Terrier (a U.S. breed of "pittie") was called "The Nanny" dog coz they were so good with children ? BTW -- they still are !

  3. Adorable post Sybil! I've long held the belief that a dog's personality has much to do with the way they are raised, and if they are raised with love and kindness, that is generally how the dog will be too. How sad that some breeds have such horrible discrimination.

    1. Thanks Karma, Certain people should be banned from owning dogs. Not dogs being banned from existing.

  4. I love how cats and dogs all have their own unique personalities. Sooki is adorable and is such a lucky dog to be able to go to work with your daughter. They look so sweet together in the picture. The law in Ontario seems very arbitrary, like racial profiling at its worst...

    1. You are so right Barbara. It started with one breed being banned in Italy and now there are over 70 breeds banned there !

  5. We have had two German Shepherds and two Rottweilers over the years and have often been told that we own "vicious" breeds of dogs. Isn't that hilarious? If our dogs were vicious it would be as a result of us being vicious people, which we certainly are not! How could you not melt when looking at Sooki? :)

    1. Happily, a lot of "rescued" pitbulls from Ontario end up here, with the result that folk here don't even notice them. Here people cross the do TO pat your dog, while in other places they'd cross the road to avoid your dog. I met a huge Rottie puppy at the beach one day. He was a great, big, bundle of love.

  6. Sooki is about the cutest thing I have seen in a long time. There are several pits that come to the local dog park, and all of them are real sweethearts.

    1. Thanks Les. It's awful to think how we vilify these wonderful dogs, when the fault lies in us.
