What winter means to me.


Scott Thomas over at Views Infinitum is running another of his photo challenges.

He wants us to post an image or a group of images that show what winter means to us.

I could browse through my photos and find some loverly shots of snow sparkling on branches, but really, what winter means to me is ... IT'S TOO FRIKKIN' COLD TO GARDEN !

Most days here in winter we don't even have snow.  More often than not, in our little Eastern Passage micro climate, we have cloud and drizzle.

It's not that I specifically don't like cloud and drizzle, but ... IT'S TOO FRIKKIN' COLD TO GARDEN !

This shot represents what winter means to me as I get cold just looking at it, and there's not a living thing in sight, coz ... IT'S TOO FRIKKIN' COLD TO GARDEN !

I'm going to go lie down now and browse the seed catalogues, put up a "Do not disturb" sign, and set my alarm for late April.

    Oh I can so relate to this! In Orkney we get lots of grey cloud and rain... and wind! And I struggle some days to go outdoors and take photos! I too am browsing seed catalogues, though our season always starts very late - about May..... still - a girl can dream :-)

      We traditionally do not plant out vegetables till mid-May at the earliest.

    I'm with you in spirit, cuz. I tried the seed books, and flower books, and small container gardening books and they all made me sad and anxious for the warm weather. So I'll se setting my alarms right along with you!

    I am trying--well, thinking about--going out for a walk. It's 10 degrees F right now, too lazy to translate to C but it's freezing and snowing lightly. That is a lovely picture of Peggy's Cove. That's what winter is good for. Pretty pictures. :)

    I suppose you'll have to keep dreaming of April. We hardly experince any winter where I live. Today it is a tad cool for me but some people are outdoors without a jacket.

    I miss the garden too! I never cleaned any of my garden out last fall so I've got a big mess for spring time. Your lighthouse shot is very lonely and wintery.

      I didn't get any seed catalogs in the mail this year unfortunately! That could be because the last time I ordered, I ordered online. I get regular emails from Burpee Seed, but that is not nearly as nice as looking through a catalog.

      I hate wasting paper but I must confess that looking at web pages is just not the same as leafing through a seed catalogue, circling items, hi-liting items, making lists in the margins ...I think I'll be buying directly at Halifax Seed this year. Embarrassed to say that I have only just learned they have an outlet store here (after three years of buying grocery/co op store seeds)

      Frikkin' cold, maybe, but what beautiful sight ! Gorgeous picture. As for the seeds, it is much too soon over here too. We have to wait until late April or mid-May.

    I spent a few hours at Peggy's Cove many years ago. Such a beautiful spot.
    Sorry its so frikkin cold up there.

      Visiting to Peggy's Cove is high on most visitor's lists. I just lament all the other equally beautiful spots that languish for want of visitors.
